Athletes
Jim Damis; Class of 1953
Football: Jim was a 1952 All-City halfback and PIL scoring champion with 59 points. The 1952 team won six out of seven games, losing only to Jefferson. Jim also played on Ted Ogdahl’s ’51 PIL Champs (7-0) that finished the season 11-1, losing on first downs in an infamous tie with Grants Pass High School.
Basketball: Jim was Honorable Mention All-City guard and second leading scorer on our 1952-’53 basketball team. Track and Field: He excelled as sprinter in track. At the 1952 City Meet, he ran the 100 in 10.7, and took second in the 440. During the 1953 City Meet, Jim bested his time, winning the 100 in 10.2. He came in third in the 440 and won the mile relay (440 x 4). At the 1953 State Meet, Jim came in fourth in the 440.
Additional: Jim has a BA from Harvard University, where he competed in football and rugby. From there, he attended Columbia University Law School, and is a long-time attorney in Portland.
Ced Aichele; Class of 1955
Ced was a two-year letterman in basketball and baseball.
Basketball: Ced was captain and All-City forward on Paul McCall’s 1954-55 basketball team. A prolific scorer, he set Grant's record for points scored in a season (260) and for a single game (39 against Roosevelt).
Baseball: Ced was a solid, starting pitcher on Barney Koch’s baseball team.
Additional: Ced has a BA from the University of Portland. A career in law enforcement led him to the FBI National Academy, and from there to Portland where he became Deputy Chief of Police.
Larry Hoffman; Class of 1955
Football: Larry was one of the PIL's leading scorers as running back. Though injured in mid-season of his senior year, he was still selected to play in the 1955 Shrine All-Star game.
Basketball: Larry made second team All-City guard in basketball
Baseball: He was also an All-City center fielder on the 1955 baseball team.
Additional: Larry attended the University of Arizona where he was a 3-year letterman on their baseball team as the lead-off hitter and an outfielder. He played in the College World Series in 1959 and 1960.
Ted Abram; Class of 1959
Track and Field: Ted was active in track, cross country, and basketball. In 1958 he was the PIL Champion in the mile, and 2nd in State. In 1959, Ted was the City and State Champ in the mile (4:21.2), a 1959 dual meet record. He was a Scholastic Magazine All-American in the half mile and mile.
Additional: Ted attended the University of Oregon, where he ran for Bill Bowerman. He was an outstanding sophomore, finishing 4th in the Half Mile in the US. His 2-Mile Relay team set national indoor and outdoor records. Ted received the Doyle Higdon Award for Excellence in Athletics and Scholarship. He went on to graduate from Willamette University Law School. He served as a Klamath County District Court Judge, a Circuit Court Judge, and was the 1986 Oregon Judge of the Year.
Mike Hardin; Class of 1960
Baseball: A three-year letterman in baseball, Mike was an All-City infielder on the 1958 PIL and State Championship Baseball Teams. He was All-City infielder again in 1960.
Basketball: Starting guard on the PIL Championship Team and State Tournament basketball team.
Additional: Mike also played football at Grant. He attended Linfield College and the University of Oregon Dental School. A retired dentist, Mike is the first Grant Athletic Hall of Fame inductee from the class of 1960.
Michael Carroll; Class of 1962
Football: Michael was Captain and All-City guard on football team, and also played quarterback and linebacker in single-wing formations.
Basketball: He lettered on our basketball team that finished 2nd in PIL, and played in the 1962 Shrine All-Star game. Additional: Mike played football at Portland State University. After graduating, he went to the University of Oregon Medical School, then positions at Montreal General Hospital, University of Michigan, and University of Utah. He has authored numerous articles in the New England Journal of Medicine. Mike eventually moved to Alaska, where he was very active in Fairbanks in the areas of health, arts, sports, and philanthropy. The J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital was named for him following his death in 2011.
Steve Byers; Class of 1966
Cross Country: Steve was a key member of 1964 State Championship Cross Country team, and was State Cross Country Champ (2.5 miles in 12.35) in 1965.
Track and Field: He was also a member of the 1965 and 1966 State Championship Track teams, and was the 1966 PIL Champion and City Meet record holder in the mile.
Additional: Mike was a member of the National Honor Society. He attended University of California, where he was a distance runner for the school. He was a volunteer distance racing coach for Lincoln High School. Mike is CEO/President of Cascade Rubber Products.
Joe Simpson; Class of 1968
Track and Field: Joe was a member of 1967 PIL Championship Track and Field team and co-captain of 1968 State Championship Track and Field team. Joe also played football. In addition, he was Sergeant of the Royal G Lettermen’s Club, and sang in the Grant High Choir, where he was Sergeant of Arms at Clefs (music club).
Additional: Joe won a Golden Glove Boxing Scholarship to the Knott Street Boxing Club. He attended Linfield College where he participated in football, and track and field (All-Conference). While in college, Joe was co-founder and president of the Black Student Union. He earned a BS degree in 1968, and a Masters of Teaching at Lewis and Clark in 1977. Then on to Portland State University where Joe received a Certification in Education Administration (1983). Joe returned to Grant in 1972. He was Football Assistant Coach for the PIL Champion Teams in 1976, ’77, ’78, and ’79. He was the Track Assistant Coach, which were PIL Champions: 1972-80.
Elaine Pond White; Class of 1976
Cross Country: In 1974, Elaine was the first recognized OSAA State Cross Country Champion for girls with a time of 10.56 for two miles.
Track: She was PIL Champion in the mile and State Champion in the mile (5:03.53) in 1975.
Additional: Elaine attended Brigham Young University. She is currently living in Provo, Utah, and working as massage therapist. A proud mother of three and grandmother of four, Elaine is still running!
Debbie Engelstad; Class of 1982
Softball and Soccer: Debbie was All-PIL in softball and soccer.
Additional: Debbie attended Portland State University, where she competed and won honors playing softball. She has a BA in Physical Education and MS from PSU. Debbie played in World Master’s Games in softball and soccer. She returned to Grant in 1987 as Physical Education teacher, and softball and soccer coach. She has also provided leadership in Portland Public Schools and the State Department of Education by setting priorities for curriculum and state standards in physical education. Debbie continues to work with community youth programs and girls athletics.
Elizabeth Wild; Class of 2004
Track and Cross Country: In 2001, Elizabeth was State Champion in 1500 meters as a freshman, and in 2003 she was PIL Champ, 3rd in State in 800, and a member of 4 x 400 relay. 2004 brought another PIL and State Champion in 800 (2:15.81) and 4 x 400 relay (3:56.19). She was senior Class President and voted Most Likely to Succeed.
Additional: Elizabeth volunteered as a cross country coach at Grant and Steens Mountain Running Camp for three summers. She received a BA from Dartmouth, where she participated in track and cross country, winning several Ivy League Invitationals. Elizabeth set up after-school running program at elementary schools in New Hampshire. She is currently a Wyndham Hotel executive in New York.

George's cumulative record for his seven years at Grant was 53-23, with his most successful years being 1975 (7-2), 1976 (7-2), 1977 (6-2), 1978 (9-2), 1979 (10-1). The team won or tied for PIL Championships for four consecutive years, from 1976-79. Coach Rallis played football for three years at Richland High School, in Richland, WA, before coming to Grant in 1973. He went on to coach at David Douglas High School, and in 1983, was named Mt. Hood Conference Coach of the Year.
