Athletes
George Claussen, Class of 1955
George won five varsity letters. Swimming: He was a member of four consecutive state championship swim teams, and won the City and State champion in the backstroke, individual medley, and freestyle.
Track and Field: George won the 180-yard low hurdle PIL title in 1955.
Additional: He is a graduate of Oregon State University and OHSU School of Dentistry, and practiced dentistry in the Navy and San Jose, CA. He died in a skiing accident in Switzerland at age 46. George's sister, Marlis Claussen, is a member of the Grant 2014 Hall of Fame. Accepting for George was his sister, Marlis Carson, and sons Brant and Darin.
Dr. Ben Balme, Class of 1957
Ben won seven varsity letters! Football: He was All-City football junior and senior years.
Track and Field: Ben was the PIL Champion in the javelin throw in 1957 and co-captain of the 1957 Shrine team.
Additional: Ben was 1st All-Ivy, All-East, and Associated Press All-American guard and linebacker while playing football at Yale. He was a member of the team's silver anniversary All-Ivy League, and a member of Yale’s Sports Hall of Fame. Ben attended Yale Medical School, and was the winner of the George H. W. Bush Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. He is an orthopedic surgeon who lives in the Portland area.
Harry Doyle, Class of 1957
Tennis: Harry was City and State singles champion in 1956 and 1957, earning three varsity letters at Grant
Additional: While attending the University of Washington, Harry earned four varsity letters and received All-Pac 8 honors. He was head tennis coach at Portland State University for three seasons. Harry is a retired sales executive.
Dick Brown, Class of 1958
Dick is a 10-time varsity letter winner at Grant! Football: He was an All-City lineman his junior and senior years.
Track and Field: Dick was a City and State champion in shot put and discus throw.
Additional: While at the University of Oregon, Dick was a Hayward relays discus champ and shot put champ. He was also captain of the wrestling team for three seasons. After graduating from UO, he went on to attend OHSU Dental School. He is a retired dentist in Jacksonville, OR.
Judy Mucha Jimenez, Class of 1959
Swimming: Judy earned four varsity letters in swimming. She was City and State champion in freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly.
Additional: A Stanford grad, Judy worked with the Peace Corps in Ecuador, and taught English and swimming in Barcelona, Spain. Judy is married to a cancer specialist and lives in Orchard Park, NY.
Bob Weaver, Class of 1961
Bob has six varsity letters. Football: He was All-PIL twice, and All-State once, in football. Bob was Shrine game captain in 1961.
Wrestling: He was also All-PIL and All-State honoree in wrestling.
Additional: An OSU grad, Bob was an industrial relations manager for Hyster and co-owner of an executive recruiting company. He was also an enthusiastic youth sports coach, as well as being active in disaster recovery and rebuilding efforts in Haiti.
Dick De Bernardis, Class of 1963
Football, wrestling, track...Bob earned seven varsity letters. He was All-PIL twice in football and a two-time PIL wrestling champion.
Additional: Dick graduated from Lewis & Clark College, and retired from the U.S. Marine Corps with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He taught school and coached football after retiring from the Marine Corps. Dick lives in Gallatin Gateway, MT.
Tim Myers, Class of 1970
Bob earned four varsity letters in golf and two in basketball. A member of 1968-69 boys state championship basketball team, Bob was also a state golf champion in 1969 and 1970.
Additional: He attended Portland State University, but left college to play on the PGA mini-tour. He was assistant golf pro at Columbia Edgewater and Charbonneau Golf Courses, where he worked for 28 years. Tim won the Oregon PGA Championship in 1979. He passed away in 2001 at the age of 49. Accepting for Tim was his brother, Tom Myers.
Greg Cotton, Class of 1974
Greg won five varsity letters while at Grant. He played varsity football in 1973, and varsity basketball in 1974.
Track: Greg won the State Decathlon Championship in 1974, and was the PIL City champ in pole vault the same year, setting a Grant record for pole vault.
Additional: Greg graduated from Linfield College, where he was the track team captain, and placed in the top three in numerous decathlon events. He was the assistant track coach at Oregon City, Marshall and Grant, and was head track coach at Grant from 1998-2008. Greg is the son of Mark Cotton, legendary Grant track coach and member of the Grant and PIL Halls of Fame.
Anthony Bates, Class of 1975
Track: Anthony won four varsity letters at Grant. He was the City and State champ 1974-75 in 110 high hurdles, and 1974-75 City and State champ in the 330-yard intermediate hurdles. He was also the City and State champ 1974-75 in 440-yard sprint.
Additional: Anthony has worked at the Oregon Steel Mills, PSU student housing, and at Providence-Milwaukie as a medical assistant. He’s semi-retired.
Andy Mott, Class of 1982
Basketball, football and track: Andy transferred to Grant from Washington High, where he was All-PIL in basketball as a sophomore and junior. He attended Grant his senior year and what a year it was: he was an All-PIL wide receiver in football; All-PIL and All-Metro in basketball; and, qualified for the state track meet in the 400 relay, mile relay, and triple jump.
Additional: Andy played football and basketball at Oregon State. He currently works for the TV show Grimm in the Portland area.
Rick Mestler, Class of 1988
Track: Rick earned six varsity letters at Grant. He was the PIL cross-country champ junior year and 1500 PIL champ his senior year. Gary was second in state meet in the 3000 meter race, and PIL and State champ his senior year.
Additional: A four-time All-American in the 3000 meter steeple chase at the U of Oregon, Rick qualified three times for the Olympic trials in the 3000 meter steeple chase. Rick works in Eugene as a business analyst for PeaceHealth. He is also a volunteer for the Oregon Track Club and is a court appointed special advocate for Lane County.

Gary Noble: coach at Grant from 1965-1997. Gary is an Oregon State University graduate. He was Assistant Track Coach under Mark Cotton, and coached both boys and girls track, cross-country, sprints, and hurdles. He was Head Track Coach from 1990-1997. He was named 1988-1989 PIL Assistant Coach of the Year, and the 1989-1990 PIL Oregon High School Assistant Coach of the Year. Gary taught history for 32 years at Grant.
