Athletes
Eric Armstrong, Class of 1939
Eric earned five varsity letters in baseball, football and soccer.
Football: He played in the 1938 Milk Bowl and was All-City and All-State football in 1937 and 1938. Soccer: All-City soccer 1938. Eric was a WWII Air Force veteran and retired after 35 years at the rank of Lt. Colonel. He passed away in 2010.
Don Hoff, Class of 1941
Football: Don played in the 1941 Milk Bowl and was All-City and All-State in football in 1939 and 1940.
Track and field: He won the city shot put championship in 1940 and 1941. Don earned five varsity letter.
Additional: A WWII vet, Don was a car dealer in Redding, California. He passed away in 2010.
Bob Morrison, Class of 1941
Five varsity letters at Grant. Football: Bob played in the 1941 Milk Bowl, and was All-City and All-State in 1940.
Track and field: He ran the 100 and 200.
Additional: Bob was also a WWII vet, and worked for 40 years for Crown-Zellerbach Paper Company. Bob passed away in 2003.
Marlis Claussen Carson, Class of 1953
Swimming: Marlis earned two varsity letters. She won the city championship in the freestyle in 1950, set PIL records in the 75 yard individual medley and the 100 yard breaststroke, and had numerous first place finishes in NW swim meets while at Grant.
Additional: A straight A student all four years at Grant, Marlis graduated from the University of Oregon and went on to teach at Grant and PCC. Marlis' brother, George Claussen, is a member of the Grant 2013 Hall of Fame. She lives in Lake Oswego.
J.D. Brown, Class of 1958
Swimming: J.D. earned four varsity letters at Grant and was the 1955 PIL 120-yard individual medley champ, the 1955 PIL freestyle champion, 1957 PIL 40-yard and 100-yard freestyle champion, and a member of the 1955 and 1956 State Championship Teams. He also earned high school All-American recognition.
Additional: J.D. graduated from the University of Washington where he was an All-American swimmer. He's made a career in the truck leasing business, and lives in Issaquah, WA.
John Bakkensen, Class of 1961
Track & field: John won three varsity letters at Grant for throwing the discus. He won the PIL City meet in 1960, setting a new PIL meet discus throw record. John won the Oregon High School AAU championship meet in 1960 with the longest high school discus throw in Oregon history, then won the City and State discus championship in 1961 and repeated as AAU champion.
Additional: He graduated from Harvard, where he was the Ivy League champ in 1963, ‘64 and ’65, and won the Penn relays in 1963. John graduated from Stanford Law School. He has worked as a volunteer track coach and competed as an amateur athlete. In 1997, he was inducted into the Harvard Varsity Club Hall of Fame. He is a practicing attorney who lives in Portland.
Richard Lewis, Class of 1968
Richard earned six varsity letters at Grant in football, basketball, baseball, track.
Football: He was first team All-City and All-State in football in 1967-68 and All-City basketball.
Additional: While at Portland State University, Richard was named All-Conference in football. He played in the NFL for the Houston Oilers, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets as a linebacker, then went on to play in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts. Following retirement from professional football in 1980 after an 8-year career, Richard worked for the Toronto Parks and Recreation Department. He is an ordained minister and established the Toronto Gospel Center, as well as active in the Goals for Youth Programs with the NFL and with numerous community based organizations. Richard lives in Toronto where he managed the Toronto Board of Trade’s Client Visitation Department and local business network.
Patty Jensen, Class of 1969
Swimming: Patty won City and State championship in the individual 200-yard freestyle in 1966. Golf: Patty won eight varsity letters at Grant and was a member of the City Championship golf team in 1968 and 1969. In 1969, she was the runner-up in the Oregon Junior Girl’s Golf Championship. Voted most athletic girl by classmates, Patty graduated #1 in her class of 675 students.
Additional: She was a member of Willamette University golf team for two years, and a member of Stanford’s women’s golf team for two years, graduating in 1973. She spent her professional career as an actuary in the insurance business. Today she plays golf with a 10 handicap and lives in Camas, WA.
Ralph Bakkensen, Class of 1969
Track & field (shot put, discus): Ralph earned three varsity letters at Grant. He set city and state records in both shot and discus; his shot put throw of 60’ 1” was a Grant record for 36 years! Ralph was also undefeated in 1969 in the shot put at the Corvallis Invitational, the City Relays, the City Meet, and the State Meet, where he had a record of 52-0 in the shot put, 151-7 in the discus.
Additional: Ralph attended Stanford University, where he was a member of the track and field team. A co-captain of the team his senior year, Ralph won awards for superior academic and track achievement. He is a graduate of Stanford Law School and is a practicing attorney who lives in Andover, MA.
Greg Schukart, 1970
Greg earned eight varsity letters at Grant in basketball, abd track & field. He won the mile championship as a freshman, the PIL discus throw in 1970, was 2nd in the discus in State Championship meet in 1970, and won the state decathlon in 1970. He was named the high school hall of fame cross-country runner in 1970. Additionally, Greg was a member of the 1969 state championship basketball team.
Additional: He graduated from Western Oregon University, where he placed first in the discus in the Oregon Junior College championships. Greg taught Physical Education and Health for 30 years in Beaverton, where he lives. He is also a noted designer of P.E. equipment.
Robert Bates, Class of 1970
Robert won seven varsity letters at Grant in football and track and field. Football: He was All-PIL his sophomore, junior and senior years in football. Track and Field: Robert won city and state championship in the 60 yard dash, and at the same event at the Oregon Indoor Meet. He set relay meet records with his brother, Onia, while a freshman.
Additional: Robert attended Mt. Hood Community College and the University of Texas/El Paso, where he played football, and the University of Hawaii were he ran track. He is retired from the Union Pacific Railroad and lives in Portland. OR.
Susan Nozaki Lamont, Class of 1976: Swimming: Sue won four varsity letters a Grant. She won the 200-meter butterfly at age 14 at the Junior Olympics, won City and State championships for the 100 yard butterfly in 1975 and 1976, and set city records.
Additional: Sue graduated from the University of Oregon in 1980 with a degree in business. She is the marketing director for KATU-TV and resides in Lake Oswego. OR.
Jay Kirschenman, Class of 1980
Jay won five varsity letters at Grant. Football: An All-City and All-State quarterback in 1978 and 1979, Jay played in the 1980 Shrine Game. Basketball: He was a two-year starter for the basketball team, averaged ten points per game in helping lead the Generals to a 2nd place finish in the 1980 state tournament.
Additional: Jay played quarterback at Oregon State and graduated in 1985. He is a member of the Beaver Blue Key Honor Society and attended the Wharton School of Business. He is an employee benefits specialist within the insurance industry, and his clients have included Microsoft, Nintendo, T-Mobile, Seattle Mariners, and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. Jay and his wife, Juliana (Grant 1981), have lived in San Diego, Houston, Seattle, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and now San Francisco.
Andre Broadous, Class of 2008
Andre earned nine varsity letters at Grant!
Football: Andre was the Oregon player of the year, the Oregon fan player of the year, and a West Coast Top 50 High School Player. He was on the first team All-City and All-State as quarterback, was the Portland city offensive player of the year with a record of 18-1 his junior and senior years.
Basketball: A two-year starter, Andre was a member of our 2007 State Championship team.
Baseball: Andre was an All-City and All-State outfielder for Grant.
Additional: He attended Cal-Poly University, where he was a three-year football starter and held the school record holder in rushing TDs. He was also first in the country in passing efficiency, All-Conference two years, had three conference championships, and was a pre-season Walter Peyton Award nominee his senior year. Andre received an NFL rookie mini-camp invite, and played arena football two seasons. As of 2021, he is a successful real estate in the Portland-Metro area.
Coaches
Carolyn Fitzwater: Carolyn was at Grant from 1972-1990, teaching Physical Education, and coaching softball and basketball. In 1979, the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association named her Coach of the Year. She is a member of the American Softball Association Hall of Fame, and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. Carolyn played shortstop for the Erv Lind Florists from 1950-1964, when the team won the National Championship. She passed away in May, 2014.
Janice Shaffer Wall: Janice spent 27 years at Grant, coaching gymnastics, track and field, softball, volleyball, and swimming. A Health and Physical Education major at University of Oregon, she graduated in 1970. While at UO, Janice was an All-American swimmer in the butterfly and individual medley. She retired in 2003.
