2016 Inductees
Loyd Gallaher, Class of 1958
Earned five varsity letters in basketball and baseball.
Baseball: All-City pitcher in 1957 & 1958; played on the 1958 State Championship team and won the semi-final game. He threw one of the best curve balls in PIL history. Loyd played baseball at the U of Oregon, graduated from PSU, and taught high school in California.
Basketball: All-City guard on the 1958 basketball team that finished 2nd in state with a record of 26-1.
Additional: Loyd worked as a sales and marketing rep for Lamb Western. Loyd passed away in 2002.
Terry Brown, Class of 1960
Earned nine varsity letters at Grant in football, wrestling and track.
Football: All-City lineman in football his senior year, captain of the football team junior and senior years, starting lineman in 1960 Shrine game.
Wrestling: 1960 PIL heavyweight wrestling champion.
Track: Second in PIL track championships in the shot-put throw his senior year.
Additional: Terry was a PIL academic all-star and a National Merit Scholar. He played freshman football at Stanford and coached soccer in the 1970’s for the Reynolds Soccer Club. Currently, Terry has retired as a Vice-President for Columbia Sportswear in 2001. He lives in Redmond, WA.
Denise Griffith Jensen, Class of 1973:
Gymnastics: Denise earned three varsity letters in gymnastics at Grant. She was PIL All-Around gymnastics champion in 1970 and 1971, state champion in the floor exercise, all-around gymnast state champion, and state champion in the uneven bars and the balance beam. Additionally, Denise was AAU Junior National Champion and qualified for the Pan-American Games at age 15.
Additional: Denise lives in Friday Harbor, WA and is a trauma doctor.
Pat Shaw, Class of 1977:
Football: Pat earned six varsity letters at Grant and was the All-City quarterback in football in 1976.
Baseball: Pat was All-City and All-State in baseball in 1977; top hitter in the PIL in 1977 with a .469 batting average; starting outfielder in the State vs. Metro All-Star Series in 1977. He played four years of varsity baseball at Oregon State.
Additional: Pat, the son of another Grant great, George Shaw, is now retired and lives in the Portland area.
Tommy Hicks, Class of 2005:
Tennis: Tommy won four varsity letters at Grant; he was All-City and All-State four consecutive years. During his freshman year he won the PIL tennis championship; in his sophomore year he was PIL champ and 2nd in state; during his junior years he was the PIL champion and 2nd in state; and, as a senior year won the PIL championship. Tommy was undefeated in four years of PIL tennis matches!
Additional: He played four years of college tennis at Santa Clara and played on the Futures Professional Tennis Tour for two years. He has coached national ranked junior players in the Bay Area. Tommy is a business executive in San Francisco.

Coaches
Julian Amaya, Coach: For 30 years (1966-1996), Julian coached football, basketball, track, tennis, and gymnastics at Grant. He was one of Grant’s--and the PIL’s--most versatile coaches, and coached numerous PIL championship teams. A great gentleman and a true winner! Additionally: Julian was born in Pueblo, Colorado and graduated from Pacific University. He married his wife, Jeanie, in 1952; they were married for 64 years. He passed away on April 8, 2019.
Billy White, Coach: Billy spent 27 years (1966-1993) as a teacher and coach of football, track, and gymnastics at Grant. His gymnastics teams were PIL district champions in 1971 (2nd in state), 1972 1973, 1974, 1976, 1977, and 1980. Billy was inducted into the PSU Hall of Fame in 2006. He also coached at the Matt Dishman Community Center while at Grant. While attending high school in Roseburg, he was All-League and All-State halfback, playing in the Shrine games, and was named best running back in the state. He graduated from PSU, where he played football and earned the nickname "Bye Bye Billy." Now retired, he lives in the Estacada area.
Brian Samore, Grant Athletic Director: Community Service Inductee
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Brian was three-time 1st team All-Conference in basketball at North High School, and 2nd team All-State his senior year. He was All-Conference at Grinnell College, played four years of Pro basketball in Europe, and was an avid outdoorsman, skier and photographer. Brian was involved in education for 21 years. As our Athletic Director, he possessed tremendous enthusiasm for all sports and was a great ambassador for our school.
