The three principals of Grant High School who succeeded W.T. Fletcher knew him as a man. A.F. Bittner, Colton Meek, and Harold Kleiner would each make a point to educate incoming students about the historical meaning of the murals. The principals that followed were, for the most part, unaware of the historical significance and value of the paintings, resulting in the loss of the murals.
